How to treat your paper
Paper is a living material. Changes in moisture and temperature have a considerable effect on it. If the surrounding air is more humid than the paper, the paper fibres absorb the humidity and swell/extend. If the air is drier than the paper, the paper fibres release their own moisture and the paper shrinks.
- Always store paper in a climatised room. The ideal room temperature should be between 18-22º C and the relative humidity 40-50%.
- If the temperature in the storage room varies significantly from the printing room, make sure the paper is allowed to adjust to the printer-room environment before you open the packages.
- It's always best to open the packages one by one, as needed.
- Open them carefully in order to avoid nicking, crimping or otherwise damaging the sheets of paper.
- Avoid leaving unprotected sheets of paper in your printers, faxes or other equipment for long periods of time. Humidity and dust can affect them.
- The printing suppliers have two opinions about fanning the paper before printing: it either increases or decreases the static electricity in paper. If and when jams occur a common procedure is to fan only part of the ream and see if that helps.
